Whale swim

Seasonal Special : Whale swim

The whales you can observe during the whale swim are humpback whales.
Humpback whales are massive marine mammals, exceeding 10 meters in length and weighing approximately 30 tons.
After feeding extensively in the North Pacific during the summer, they migrate to Okinawa’s warm waters between winter and spring for birthing and raising their young.
Let’s go witness the close bond between mother and calf,
as well as the whales’ dynamic actions!

About Whale swim

The Whale Swim experience allows you to observe the whales’ underwater behavior from the water’s surface using snorkeling gear.
This is a popular tour that offers an up-close and immersive experience observing the majestic whales in their natural habitat.
※Swimming after whales or free diving is prohibited.

Once whales are spotted…
The captain will decide whether swimming is feasible based on the situation. If swimming is possible, preparations for entry will begin.

Preliminary confirmation

This tour begins with searching for whales, which can sometimes take several hours.
On rare occasions, the tour may end without spotting any whales.
Even if whales are found, entering the water may not be possible if sea conditions or the behavior of the whales make it unsafe.
In Okinawa, whale watching takes priority, so if our timing overlaps with a whale-watching boat, we will wait for them to leave or move on to look for other whales.

Whales are wild animals, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Swimming plans may change to whale watching based on whale behavior or sea conditions.

How to Enjoy Whale swim

Let’s observe the underwater scenery

Hold back the urge to swim and simply float on the surface to observe!
If the whales become curious about you, there’s a higher chance they will approach on their own.

Entry Instructions

  • Boats can suddenly rock, so after putting on your fins and mask, please sit on the deck and wait.
  • Remain seated on the deck until you receive the signal to enter the water.
  • Follow staff instructions and enter the water promptly and quietly.
  • Once in the water, move away from the boat quickly and do not go underneath it.
  • Stay close to the staff and ensure you do not move ahead of them.
  • Always keep an eye on the staff on the boat or at the surface and keep track of the whales’ position.
  • Do not swim or chase the whales. Since whales are very shy, avoid kicking the surface with your fins.

Surface Guidelines

  • During the mother-calf period, mother whales are highly sensitive.
  • Do not approach or chase them under any circumstances.
  • Do not chase whales that have swum past you.
  • Avoid being behind a whale. The tail can be dangerous if it swings or hits.
  • Avoid approaching whales displaying active behavior as it may pose a danger.
  • If a whale approaches you, move away slowly.
  • Whales may surface to breathe; ensure you are not directly above them.
  • Do not touch the whales. They may have barnacles on their bodies, which could injure you.

Getting Back on the Boat

  • Once the whale is out of sight, you’ll return to the boat. Please line up behind the guide.
  • When the boat approaches, hold onto the side rope attached to the boat.
  • After the person ahead of you climbs the ladder, take your turn to get back on board.
  • Depending on sea conditions, the ladder may sway. Follow the guide’s instructions on where to hold to avoid accidents.
  • Take care not to drop your fins or mask; keep them with you.
  • If multiple short entries and exits are required, rest on the boat if you feel tired.
  • In case of longer waiting periods between entries, please dress warmly to stay comfortable.
  • Feel free to eat at your own timing.
However, depending on whale activity, there might be an entry during the lunch break.
